“…Rousse’s history suggests we need to invent a new category of achievement, one that mingles creative talent with emotional talent, one that mixes art and life.”

Lightsey Darst, MNArtists

I am an interdisciplinary dance artist whose specialty is site-based performance. Dedicated to collaborating with marginalized voices/bodies, I teach, write, curate, lecture, perform, and choreograph with curiosity and mirth.

Artist Statement

My practice and research move across physical and mental realms as I straddle the worlds of ballet and site-based performance, equally defending and challenging the form in which I trained and thrived. A curious, tenacious, and rebellious nature rewarded me with a vivid career, singled-out by the press as “feral,” “scrappy,” “wild,” and “a strange beauty,” I came to embrace the sobriquet “Renegade Ballerina.” These days I’m avoiding labels and honing and leveraging both my dance and other skills: teaching, choreographing, curating and producing, writing, advocating. I call upon any and all to advocate change, to interrogate, to detoxify the studio and stage, place and people, to create dance that moves us closer to each other, to reality, to honesty and care. Still rigorous, still humorous, often dangerous, I aim to be in consort with people who can see beyond the skin, flesh, bones, darkness, and lightness through to the exquisite meatbag I am now.
